SaaS companies expanding overseas often see churn rise in new markets and assume the product is the problem. A large share of that churn may be involuntary: customers who intended to keep paying but whose payments failed.

## Why failures increase abroad

Cross-border card payments are declined more often than domestic ones. Issuing banks may flag foreign merchants as risky, some cards do not support recurring international charges, and currency conversion can trigger extra checks. In some markets, card usage itself is lower than in the home market.

## Retry logic

Do not retry a failed payment only once. Smart retries spaced over several days, timed to likely payday patterns, recover a meaningful part of failed charges. Many billing platforms offer this; check that it is enabled and configured.

## Dunning emails in the right language

Payment failure emails should be clear, polite and in the customer's language, with a direct link to update payment details. Send a sequence rather than one message, and say exactly when access will be paused.

## Card updater services

Card networks offer account updater services that refresh expired or replaced card details automatically. Ask your payment provider whether this is available.

## Offer alternative payment methods

Local methods, bank transfers for annual plans and, for some customer groups, crypto payments can keep customers who cannot pay reliably by card. Crypto works best for annual or prepaid plans, where a single payment covers a longer period.

## Grace periods

A short grace period before access is removed gives customers time to fix the problem without losing data or interrupting work. Communicate it clearly.

## Measure separately

Track voluntary and involuntary churn as separate numbers by market. If involuntary churn is high in one country, payments, not product, are the place to start.

## Pre-expiry reminders

Many failures come from expired cards. Send a reminder before a card's expiry date asking the customer to update details, ideally a few weeks ahead. This simple step prevents a share of failures from ever happening.

## Annual plans as a buffer

Encouraging annual billing in markets with high card decline rates reduces the number of payment attempts per year and therefore the number of chances to fail. A modest discount for annual plans is often worth it for this reason alone.
